Details from RMD

Details from RMD is a dialog that shows the full description of one RMD element — a measure, a dimension, or a fact — the way it is stored in the RMD, without leaving the screen you are working on.

Where it is opened from

The dialog opens from the information icon next to an element. The icon is available:

  • In the dimension group dialog, both in the list of available dimensions and in the list of dimensions of the group
  • In the formula builder, in the elements panel and in the Properties panel
  • On the configuration screen of a fact table and on the data model canvas
  • On the data mart screen
  • In the diagrams that show the dependencies of an element

What the dialog shows

The dialog lists all the columns of the RMD table the element belongs to, in the order of the columns of that table. The meaning of each column is described on the Measures, Dimensions, and Facts pages of this section.

Values are shown the way they are displayed in the RMD:

  • Connected source — as connection / schema.table / column. If the connection has been deleted, the dialog says so instead of showing the source
  • Source data type — only when a connected source is set
  • Relevance, Required, and Visibility — as Yes or No
  • Formula — with the references to other elements shown as their names
  • Measure name — with the health icon of the measure; hovering over the icon shows the health summary (see the Measure health cards page)

Editing an element

Edit turns the list into an editable form in which every column has the editor of its type: a text field, a dropdown list, a checkbox, a cascading selection of a database column, or the formula editor. The changes are written with Save and discarded with Cancel.

Notes:

  • Dimension type and Fact type must be filled in
  • Formula and Connected source exclude each other: for the Derived and Constant types the connected source is unavailable, and for the Primary type the formula is unavailable
  • Saved changes are applied to the RMD immediately and are visible on the RMD screen and everywhere the element is used
  • When the edit form for a measure is closed after saving, all checks of the measure's health card are run again

Other actions

Besides Edit, the following buttons are available while the dialog is in view mode:

Button Action
View change history Opens the RMD change history dialog with the changes to this element across all columns — the same dialog that opens for the element on the RMD screen (see the RMD change history page)
View lineage Opens the lineage diagram of the element
Open formula builder Opens the formula of the element in the visual editor
View impact analysis Opens the impact analysis diagram of the element
View health card Opens the Measure health card dialog. Shown for measures only (see the Measure health cards page)

The lineage view and the impact analysis are described in the Fact tables section.

Open formula builder is active for measures always, and for dimensions and facts only when their type is Derived or Constant.

Roles

The Analyst and Viewer roles see the dialog as a read-only description: the Edit button and the saving controls are not shown to them. They can open the formula builder, the lineage view, the impact analysis, the change history, and the health card from it. Editing requires the Developer role or above and a valid license.

The change history opened from the dialog follows the same permissions as on the RMD screen: all roles can view it, and restoring a change requires the Developer role or above.
