RMD export
The RMD export functionality allows you to save the complete RMD structure of the current project version to a Microsoft Excel file (.xlsx). The exported file contains the data of all tabs shown on the RMD screen, so it can be used for documentation, sharing with stakeholders, or restoring the RMD configuration later via import.
Access to the export function
The export function is available on the RMD screen:
- The "Export to file" item is available via the menu on every tab of the RMD screen
- The function is available to all users, including users with the Analyst and Viewer roles
- Export does not depend on the license state
How to export
- Open the RMD screen and make sure the project version you want to export is selected
- Open the menu on any tab of the RMD screen
- Click "Export to file"
- The system generates the file and your browser downloads it
Regardless of which tab the export is started from, the file always contains the data of all RMD tabs.
Structure of the exported file
The exported file contains six sheets — one for each RMD tab. The sheet order matches the order of the tabs on the RMD screen:
| Sheet | Content |
|---|---|
| Measures | All rows of the measures tab |
| Dimensions | All rows of the dimensions tab |
| Facts | All rows of the facts tab |
| Dimension groups | List of dimension groups, sorted by name |
| Fact tables | List of fact tables in creation order |
| Relationships | List of "fact table — dimension group" relationships, sorted by fact table name and then by dimension group name |
If a new tab is added to the RMD screen in the product, its data is automatically included in exported files.
Sheets with measures, dimensions, and facts
- The columns repeat the columns of the corresponding RMD tab
- The row number "#" is added as the first column
- Every column header keeps a tooltip with the field description
Sheets with dimension groups, fact tables, and relationships
These sheets correspond to the tabs that are not edited as a spreadsheet; their columns and column order repeat the tab interface:
| Sheet | Columns |
|---|---|
| Dimension groups | #, Name, Description, Dimensions, Primary key, Related fact tables |
| Fact tables | #, Name, Description, Measures, Dimensions, Facts, Related dimension groups |
| Relationships | #, Fact table, Dimension group, Key in fact table, Key in dimension group, Relationship type |
Notes:
- The "Relationship type" column contains the relationship type "Many-to-one"
- Lists of elements (the dimensions of a dimension group; the measures, dimensions, and facts of a fact table; related fact tables and dimension groups) are written into a single cell, one name per line
Data presentation in the file
When the file is generated, the data is converted into a readable form:
- Formulas: internal identifiers are replaced with element names, for example
[Measure name] - Dropdown fields: internal identifiers are replaced with text labels in the interface language
- Checkboxes: values are shown as "Yes" / "No"
- Connected source: shown in a readable format
connection / schema.table / column - Dimension groups: hierarchical dimensions are shown with their nesting preserved
- Keys (a dimension group's primary key, the key in a fact table): shown as the connection and database names
Keys are exported in the same format that import accepts, so an exported file can be loaded back through the RMD import without changes.
Important notes
- The file contains the data of the project version that was open when the export was started
- Export is a read-only operation: it does not change any data in the project
